PDP Urges Goodluck Jonathan to Contest 2027 Presidency on Its Platform

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to run for the presidency in the 2027 general election on its platform.

This appeal follows the recent appearance of Jonathan’s presidential campaign posters across major streets in Kano, fueling speculations about his potential return to active politics. Political analysts believe Jonathan is eligible to serve another four-year term, having previously held office as president from 2011 to 2015.

Speaking to Punch, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, emphasized the party’s anticipation of Jonathan’s return, describing it as an opportunity for him to complete his work within the PDP. Abdullahi also warned against Jonathan aligning with another party, particularly the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating it would undermine his legacy and highlight APC’s perceived inconsistency.

“If Goodluck Jonathan is seriously considering running, we have been calling him to come back and complete his term. It will not be out of place, but if he runs with another political party, it will expose the hypocrisy within the APC,” Abdullahi stated.

He also noted the PDP’s contribution to Nigeria’s leadership history, citing figures such as El-Rufai, Okonjo-Iweala, Dora Akunyili, Akinwunmi Adesina, and Amina Mohammed as proud products of the party.

However, the PDP’s future direction is expected to become clearer at its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, slated for February 2025. Former PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Diran Odeyemi, indicated that the delay in the meeting reflects deeper internal struggles within the party, including potential moves to unseat the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.

Odeyemi cautioned against rushing the NEC meeting, arguing that premature actions could exacerbate the party’s crises.

“If you cannot manage yourselves as a political party, how can you manage the country?” he queried.

As the political landscape evolves, the PDP’s efforts to persuade Jonathan and resolve internal disputes will likely play a crucial role in shaping its chances in the 2027 elections.
