Controversy Surrounding Assemblies of God Wetheral Road, Owerri – Volume 2

Allegations Against the Pastor Obinna Nwoko Ph.D

One of the major issues raised against the Pastor of the Assemblies of God (AG), Wetheral Road, Owerri, is his decision to invite a guest preacher who is not from the AG denomination. Some embittered members are questioning why inviting preachers from outside the AG has suddenly become a constitutional offense.
A concerned member recalled that during the tenure of Rev. Dr. Amadi as the Senior Pastor of AGC Ikenegbu (#11 Archdeacon Dennis Street, Ikenegbu, Owerri), he also invited a preacher who raised an amount of sixty-six thousand six hundred naira (#66,600.00). Interestingly, the current General Superintendent (GS) later associated this figure with ‘666’, yet the church did not reject the funds raised. However, the invited preacher was warned not to return.

Past Precedents of External Preachers

Further examples were cited by members questioning the selective application of rules:

District Superintendent’s Invitation:

When Rev. Dr. Amadi served as the District Superintendent, he invited Rev. Uche Umeh, the General Overseer of another denomination, to a District program.

Rev. Umeh’s fried hair sparked concerns among worshippers since such a hairstyle contradicts AG’s standards for men.

Charismatic Preachers and External Ministers:

Rev. Bethel Nwanebu, known for his strong anointing, frequently invites non-AG ministers to preach in AG churches.

Similarly, in Aba, Rev. Dr. Ogboso Ejindu, a highly respected AG pastor, also invites preachers from outside AG. Many of these ministers have blessed worshippers with testimonies despite their questionable backgrounds.

National Convention Example:

At the last National Convention in Ebonyi State, organized by the General Council of the church, a non-AG preacher was also invited to minister.

Given these precedents, some church members believe the issue with Rev. Dr. Obinna Nwoko is being blown out of proportion.

Political Undercurrents?

There are suspicions that the allegations against Rev. Dr. Obinna Nwoko may be politically motivated. Some members claim that:

The Odionyemma family sees Rev. Dr. Obinna Nwoko as a threat to their brother’s leadership ambitions.

The letter of complaint against Rev. Dr. Obinna Nwoko was submitted to the GS, Rev. Dr. Abel Amadi, as early as June 2024, but he did not act on it until two months before the upcoming church leadership elections.

This delay raises questions about whether the issue was deliberately held back to weaken Rev. Dr. Obinna Nwoko’s chances of being elected.

In contrast, the Senior Pastor of AGC Orogwe, Rev. Dr. Shine Egbucha, also submitted an appeal to the General Council in 2024 regarding an issue he disagreed with. The GS handled it within a month, suggesting selective handling of cases.

Ethnic Bias?

Some critics argue that the GS, Rev. Dr. Abel Amadi, is known for playing ethnic politics (“Nwafor game”). They highlight that:

Rev. Dr. Obinna Nwoko is from Mbaise, while the Odionyemma family is from Mbieri, where they share the same District as the GS.

Some members believe this connection has influenced the GS’s handling of the issue.

Looking Ahead – Volume 3 Coming Soon
